WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF OUR NATION?

DEVELOPMENTAL INTERCOURSE

Prior to the 1500s, somewhere in the southeast Asia, north of Australia, and west of the Pacific Ocean, were people of many different tribes and petty kingdoms of clans of many families who have settled there.  Between the 1500s to the 1700s, the iberians of Western Europe in the name of the government of España also came to the aforementioned area.  These two peoples became involved in a developmental intercourse of events that resulted to the conception of Filipinas with a territorial definition represented by the Murillo Velarde Map of 1734.  This map became the international legal and moral foundation basis of our national territory today.  This embryonic stage was the critical stage where the health of our Determinants of National Attributes or DNA was developed.  Naturally, these centuries of events, led to our national umbilical cord to Madre España being cut upon our birth as a nation in 1898.

CONCEPTION OF FILIPINO

For us to recover, let us derive that DNA developed in our embryonic stage by two of the ancestors of our national development:  Jose Rizal and Gen Artemio Ricarte.

Gen Ricarte prepared a position paper which stated that chinese should be banned from business and banking.

A document was shown Jose Rizal to which he drew attention to the fact that he was incorrectly described as a chinese mestizo, saying that he was an "indio puro." Rizal further declared: “I do not agree. This is unjust! Here it says that I am a half-breed, and it isn’t true! I am a pure Filipino!” In a letter to his mother, Jose Rizal wrote: “I had a lawsuit with the Chinese and I vowed not to buy any more from them, so that sometimes I find myself very hard up. Now we have almost neither dishes nor tumblers.” Edgar Wickberg, who wrote "The Chinese in Philippine Life 1850-1898" said that in 1895, while in exile in Dapitan in Mindanao, in the southern Philippines, Jose Rizal was filled with righteous indignation at the “exploitation” of the natives by the Chinese traders, and appealed to the local residents to boycott the Chinese shops. He also opened a small sari-sari store to compete against the Chinese. Nick Joaquin, the late Philippine cultural icon, even praised Rizal’s actions: “And because Chinese financiers had a stranglehold on native agriculture, Rizal set up the Cooperative Association of Dapitan Farmers, a pioneer in economic nationalism.

OUR VALUE

As a new entity, we carried with us this national developmental code we inherited from those interacting separate entities which became our DNA. This was to be an inherent code with a set of self-regulating instinctive instructions on how we, in reference not to ourselves, but to our nation, function coherently to sustain our well-being from generation to generation.

"The Friars in the Philippines" by Coleman, and "GDP per capita in 1900 by country. Definition, graph, and map" by NationMaster.com 2010 reported:

We were among the most educated in all of Asia.  Our economy and standard of living were ahead of most of our Asian neighbors and even many European countries at that time.  In 1900, the estimated GDP per capita for the Philippines was $1033.oo.  We were the second richest nation in Asia, just a little behind Japan, having $1135.oo.  We were far ahead of China, having $652.oo or India having $625.oo.

NATIONAL DEFENSE, RESPONSE TO OUR NATIONAL VALUE

It was this status that conditioned us to respond to a defense situation at that time by rapidly developing an infant but potent defense system when dark forces were gathering heavily to invade us in an attempt to abort that birth.  It was our first encounter with a foreign aggressor force as a filipino nation.  We engaged this foreign aggressor force in 1898 without any help from any other nation.  They were foreigners and they were the emerging most powerful nation in the world at that time- the north americans of the United States.

Part of our defense system was the activation of a defense force- Ejercito Republicana Filipina.  We lost in many battles but we also defeated them in a number of documented battles like Balangiga, Mabitac, Pulang Lupa, etc..  The U.S. aggressor forces were unable to catch, lock, nor control us for years.

Our Determinant of National Attributes then, which carried our national identity was a potent code against any foreign attempt to possess it.  How we identified ourselves with our nation was demonstrated in a letter by Ellis G. Davis, Company A, 20th Kansas about us in the 1900s: "They will never surrender until their whole race is exterminated. They are fighting for a good cause, and the Americans should be the last of all nations to transgress upon such rights.  Their independence is dearer to them than life,…".  As early as April 1899, north american of the United States General Shafter already recognized that potent national identity when he made a prognosis of the future conduct of the war: "It may be necessary to kill half the filipinos in order that the remaining half of the population may be advanced to a higher plane of life than their present semi-barbarous state affords."

But the most valuable characteristic we had as determined by our organic code in the 1900s that enabled us to be an excellent functioning nation was, our unprecedented and unsurpassed sacrifice of our individual selves and unity among the regions from the north to the south, the poor, rich, military, civilian, educated, and uneducated as one filipino people defending our nation against alien aggressors.

Our individual natural warrior character and our national unity rendered the enemy forces unable to break our defense system for almost 10 years.  The defense forces among us were only compelled to give-in to the demand of the U.S. to surrender to them after they the aggressors, resorted to massive kidnappings and extermination of the civilians among us.  The U.S. until now insisted to call it reconcentration because otherwise they would fall within the category of terrorists of which they themselves set the definition.

BEYOND TERRITORIAL DEFENSE

Even after the physical level of our defenses were dismantled, we still conducted defensive actions not only against the north americans of the United States occupational forces but this time, also against the chinese creeping invasion.  For years, we maneuvered to check these taking over of our economic and political bases mostly at the developmental level.  Around November of 1924, we tried to setup a legal channel of check points for identifying and assessing foreigners entering our country as part of our defense system of checking further foreign infiltration.

However, while our legal check points where still in the setting up stage, the mainland chinese government in complementary with the north americans of the United States, with their military might providing cover, quickly dismantled our check points.  An editorial appeared on June 5, 1926 in The Tribune. It made a comment regarding: the chinese making a plaything of our exclusion laws; their out maneouvering us from the start of our border checking operations, making a fool out of us.

We tried strategies based on our present condition to gain control of as much area of our nation as we could against the foreigners. The start of our series of manoeuvres thru legal operations with the Retail Trade Nationalization Law in 1954 however, was out-manoeuvred by the chinese. After we implemented this law, some 8700 of the 10,000 chinese who rushed to get hold of certificate of filipino citizenship papers after 1946, did so after 1954. We filipinos theoretically overrun previously chinese-controlled areas the strategic value of which were at most, negligible. Thus in paper, the number of chinese registered as engaged in the retail trade was reduced and the number of us filipinos engaged in the same business was increased. In reality however, there was no physical difference. The difference was only in paper.

CONTINUOUS DAMAGE OF NATIONHOOD

This is our national identity as determined by our organic Determinants of National Attributes.  This is the link we have with our nation for generations.  The take-over and control by alien invaders of our political, economic, and defense system, continuously frustrated us as a people in recovering the developmental basis of our heredity from our founding fathers.  As a result, we lost the libido to nurture and protect our own people.  By tampering with our national DNA and transmitting in our political, economic, defense, and educational systems, their synthesized code, our inherited national identity gradually slipped away from us.  Renato Constantino with an analysis by Bert Drona elaborated this tampering of our generators of actions in the site: http://thefilipinomind.blogspot.com/2006/03/making-of-americanized-filipino-minds.html.  Our defense system lost its ability to differentiate between national interest and foreign interest.  This is the developmental Heredity Injuring Variables.  After generations of continuous onslaught of our development: we lost our national identity and unable to differentiate between self and foreigners; we became willing victims of alien slavery; we became impotent at serving the interest of our own nation; we became dependent on our alien occupants for our source of existence; and we prostituted our own nation in exchange for individual fixes.  These are symptoms of an Alienation Impotency Dependency Syndrome.

RECOVERY

We are now aware that we did have a nation.  This nation is a concept as old in existence as that of the conception of our nation in the 1500s to the 1700s.  This is a conception which is of little difference from a biological entity of reproduction, conception, embryonic development and birth.  The quality of our nationhood stood the test in the economic and social development in the early 1900s.  But the ultimate test was in how we responded to the onslaught and attempted abortion of our birth at the post-natal stage of our development by the emerging most powerful nation in the world at that time.  This is also the nationhood that sustained well developed nations who also started from scanty material resources to the present superior development.  Among these nations are the Israelis, french, germans, vietnamese, south koreans, and the japanese.  We are now aware of how we lost our inheritance.  With the proper information, recovery of our inherited nation can now be set in the right direction and within the horizon.

PILIPINAS VS FILIPINAS

The following is the report by The Commission on the Filipino Language (Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino) on the relationship of the use of the term 'Filipinas' to the recovery of unity of the whole nation as based on history, logic and the constitution.  Following the report is an observation regarding the report.  To read the whole and original of the aforementioned report from inquirer.net, click the next group of extracts:

From ‘Pilipinas’ to ‘Filipinas’

By

1 WHY go back to “Filipinas?”

There are three reasons behind the Board of Commissioners Resolution No. 13-19 (April 12, 2012) of the Commission on the Filipino Language or Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF):

First, history. There are now three forms of the name of our country.

Filipinas, the name given by Ruy López de Villalobos in 1548 and used officially by Miguel López de Legazpi when he established the Spanish colony beginning 1565, which was used continuously for 300 years until the time of Rizal and Bonifacio, and again used as the name of the first Asian republic—the “Republica Filipinas” established in Malolos in 1898.

“Philippines,” the name used by the Americans when they entered our country in 1898 and officially used by the Constitution of 1936 and up to the current Constitution of 1987.

“Pilipinas,” used starting around 1941 when the abakada without the F was promoted for general usage and continued as the translation of Filipinas and Philippines in works and documents written in the Pilipino language (which was the name given in 1959 to the national language using the abakada).

Second, language change and development. In the 1973 Constitution,  it was stated that “Filipino” instead of Pilipino should be the name of the national language.

This was restated in the 1987 Constitution, together with the proposed modernization and enrichment of the national language by way of the native languages.

The first step in this language change was the eschewing of the abakada and the promotion and spread of the alpabeto with the additional letters C, F, J, Ñ, Q, V, X and Z.

Now that the national language has an F and is called Filipino, isn’t it simply logical to restore Filipinas and gradually  discourage the use of Pilipinas?

Third, to be consistent with the method of using the eight additional letters in the Ortograpiyang Pambansa (National Orthography) being promoted by the KWF.

This is the first comprehensive examination of the new alphabet and should be read closely by users of the the Filipino language and other native languages.

The case of Filipinas is ...

... it is also a symbol of the linkage and union of the barangay, tribes and islands of our archipelago.

Before Filipinas, what Legazpi referred to as Indios were a disjointed, scattered lot. He colonized us but also gave us a first means toward national unity.

On the other hand, it is rather difficult to say that just calling our country Pilipinas is already nationalistic. This happened merely because of ...

The succeeding report is an observation regarding the preceeding report.  This is based on the developmental intercourse of our nation as the basis for our nationhood.

If we reject the way our founding fathers pronounced our nation, we reject the way they acted towards our nation as a result of their development.  If we reject their action towards our nation as a result of their development, we reject their development.  If we reject their development, we do not anymore recognize them but somebody else.  Since these somebody else are not the ones who came into existense thru our historical development, these so called founding fathers are not anymore real but synthetics.  Therefore, if the founding fathers of our nation we recognize are already synthetics, the nation we recognize today as founded by synthetic founding fathers is also synthetic.  If the nation we recognize today is synthetic, what kind of people of this nation do we have today then?

If the nation we recognize today is synthetic, how can we have love for it?  If the nation we recognize today is already synthetic, how can it produce a people that is organic the way our nation of the 1900s was founded by our organic founding fathers?  How then can we have bond with our real founding fathers?  And how then can we have bond for a people already a product of a nation founded by people who are already synthetic?  The only bond we have then is only thru a piece of paper.  With only a piece of paper devoid of flesh and blood developed thru history, how can a bond with a people that is part of our Determinant of National Actions directing us for generations, be ever formed?  Without it, how can we have a functioning social order such as that of an organic nation?

How then, can we have a nation with people acting cohesively for the life of our nation and  not individually to the detriment of such nation?  What we have been experiencing after the mid 1900s are the abandonment of the nation for the pleasure of the self and family.  This was the time our developmental defenses against the north americans of the United States invaders have finally been dismantled.  This was the time our developmental defenses against the chinese creeping invaders of our economy have finally been dismantled as a result of U.S. blocking of our efforts to wrest control of it from them.  It was then that our Determinant of National Actions in our political, economic, defense, and educational systems have been severely corrupted by these foreigners who have taken over control of direction of development of those systems.

Is it still a wonder that after the mid 1900s until today, our archipelago has become the breeding place for corruption, littering of wastes, taking advantage of the weaker by the stronger, destruction of our mountains and forests, mass exile to foreign lands, all legitimized for individual and family survival?  Is it still a wonder that those among us who act to correct the deviation that occured along our organic development to recover the nation we inherited from our founding fathers in the form of recovering our clean environment, our original forest lands, our real independence, our original resources, our sovereignty, and our original DNA are identified as the ones who are deviants?

If we are to recover from a corrupted DNA of a people that we are today, let us recover that love of nation we had as a people united in the 1900s.  If we are to recover that love of nation we had as a people united and determined at the cost of our individual and family life in the 1900s, let us recover that development of the founding fathers of our nation that directed them to act towards our nation the way they did.

THE PANATAG SHOAL SITUATION

What will be the result of the chinese taking over of a peripheral territory like Panatag Shoal to us filipinos in the future?

Yet today, have we ever been alarmed by the fact that as of 2007, between 80,000 to 100,000 chinese have already been moving covertly inside our main homeland?  These do not include those who have already gained access to having legalized their status.  They have been able to continue taking over of our banking system, building construction system, rice distribution system, real estate development, airline industry, retail industry, etc..  They have been rendering us impotent in solving the chronic rice shortage for decades.  Henry Sy, Lucio Tan, including Danding Cojuangco, have been able to continue unchecked in displacing us filipinos of access to our own economic resources and control of our development.  Now they have been taking over development of our education thru Asia Pacific College, UE, Centro Escolar University, etc.?  What has been the result?

They have developed a situation where in our military, police, and political officials have been locked in under their social and economic influence to provide them protection and access to having legal status of control of our resources and development.

Lives of millions of us, filipino families have already been damaged caused by our having been displaced from access to economic resources and by their destruction of environment as a result of whatever mode of their operations to gain huge profits. We have been so unable to have access to our very own rich resources that while the chinese are gaining strength here and are the ones enjoying such resources, we are forced to leave our own country to work or migrate abroad and have our human resources benefit foreign countries

Compare this with the status of development of nations whose people are the ones in control of their own development like the israelis, french, germans, vietnamese, australians, and the japanese today.  How is the direction of their economic, political, defense, and educational development compared to that of ours?   Compare this with the defense system of these nations who are able to sustain and protect their own people.

Compare our developmental status today with that of ours when we were a newly born nation in 1898 up to the early 1900s when our national identity and our control of our political, economic, defense and educational system was still strong even when they were being wrested away from us by the most powerful nation in the world- the north americans of the United States.  Inspite of our being a newly born nation then, the invading forces of the U.S. were unable to catch, lock and control our defense system for years until they resorted to massive hostage taking and extermination of the civilians among us.

Despite of these, our moves were still instructed by our organic national developmental code we inherited from the fathers of our nation.

The Father of the Philippine Army, Gen Artemio Ricarte and hero in the Filipino-American War, "...envisioned...the country divided into twelve 'confederate states', the islands of Guam included as well as Jolo 'and its adjacent islands'.  Manila, as soon as seized from the Americans, would be the federal capital; the official language would be Spanish; the death penalty and all prisoners would be abolished; the Chinese would be barred from business and banking;..."

We also inherited the code of Jose Rizal.  In 1895, while he was in exile in Dapitan in Mindanao, in the southern Philippines. Rizal was filled with righteous indignation at the “exploitation” of the natives by the Chinese traders, and appealed to the local residents to boycott the Chinese shops.  He also opened a small sari-sari store to compete against the Chinese.  (Wickberg, E. The Chinese in Philippine Life 1850-1898).  Nick Joaquin said: “And because Chinese financiers had a stranglehold on native agriculture, Rizal set up the Cooperative Association of Dapitan Farmers, a pioneer in economic nationalism…”

Compare our alarm level over the chinese in the Philippines today compared to that of ours in the 1900s when we conducted defense actions mostly at the developmental level against the chinese creeping invasion.  Unfortunately, the chinese government provided support in complement with the US government dismantling of the defense set-up we have established against the chinese invasion here and their taking over of our economy.

If even our fathers and heroes who were alarmed by the chinese creeping invasion of our nation already in the very centers of control of our development in our main homeland which stimulated an appropriate response of resistance then are not anymore stimulating any response from us today,  why should a chinese invasion of our peripheral territory like the Panatag Shoal stimulate an alarming response from us?

Before we get alarmed with the invasion of our peripheral territories in the near future, let us review our present situation today and examine if the chinese has not already applied to us today what the famous Chinese General Sun Tzu said something like, “Therefore, the skillful leader subdues the enemy's troops without any fighting; he captures their cities without laying siege to them; he overthrows their kingdom without lengthy operations in the field.”

It is the chinese invasion along our border like Spratly Islands that we get excited and scramble to engage them in heroic combat just like in Hollywood.  Yet we cannot even check our main homeland here with its rich natural resources and centers of control of our development already being overrun by the chinese.

If ever we have to commit lives for our fatherland, whose lives will we commit?  Then, let it be commited for a reason based not on Hollywood, but on our real situation and needs.
We should not be manipulated into engaging a physical military confrontation with the chinese just because of their invasion of our peripheral territories like Spratly Islands or Panatag Shoal.  What benefit will this give us?

This will only give the north americans of the United States an even stronger justification and on whom we filipinos perceive to be our savior, for an even increase in extent and intensity of their presence here.  This will give them an excuse being a perceived ally of the Philippines, to engage China in a military confrontation for an opportunity to reduce the threat of a looming takeover from the U.S., world military dominance.  This seems inevitable as China is already overtaking U.S.A. from world economic dominance.

If ever we have to sacrifice lives for our fatherland, let it not be ours but those of who are invading our land and displacing us filipinos from our source of sustenance and control of development of our nation.
